Dd Franco (electric bass)
Autodidacte de la musique, son inscription à l’IMFP sera déterminante : d’abord en tant que stagiaire de l’école puis enseignant, il travaille et joue avec Michel Barrot, Michel Zénino, Glenn Ferris, Tony Pagano, Doudou Gouiran … et rejoint en 1985 le Provence Brass Band de Michel Barrot au sein duquel il jouera sous la direction, entre autres, d’Ivan Jullien et Eddy Louiss.
Dd poursuivra ses collaborations jazz avec, notamment, la chanteuse Martine Kamoun, le big band de guitares dirigé par Jean-Luc Heim et Alain Blésing, mais aussi Frédéric Monzo Group, Philippe Petrucciani 5tet, Mario Santchev, Roger Nikitoff, Olivier Chambonnière …
Après une incursion dans l’opéra et la comédie musicale, Dd est sollicité par la scène ‘Latin Jazz’ : le groupe Yanza puis Añaoki (Christian Mornet, Rafael Quintero …), Tumbaito et Okambo avec Jean Namias.
After a self-taught musical apprenticeship, Dd’s enrolment to the IMFP (Professional Training Institute in Music) will be determinant, both as a student and a tutor. He will then work and play with trumpeter and IMFP founder Michel Barrot, Michel Zénino (sax), and also Glenn Ferris, Tony Pagano and Doudou Gouiran, just to name a few.
In 1985, he joins Michel Barrot’s Provence Brass Band and together they will play under the artistic direction of Ivan Jullien and Eddy Louiss.
Dd will then collaborate with IMFP singer Martine Kamoun, guitarist Philippe Petrucciani and his 5tet, pianist Mario Santchev, together with Roger Nikitoff and Olivier Chambonnière.
Later on in his career, Dd joins a very unusual line up: a guitar big band led by Jean-Luc Heim & Alain Blésing.
This experience will be followed by a brief immersion into Musicals and the Opera scene.
His interest for Latin grooves being strong, it doesn’t take him long before he takes part in projects with various bands such as “Yanza” and “Anaoki” together with Christian Mornet, Rafael Quintero … and Tumbaito and Okambo with Jean Namias.
Olivier Chambonnière (drums)
Olivier débute la batterie à l’âge de 15 ans, découvre le jazz avec la famille Petrucciani ... il jouera régulièrement avec Philippe et Louis. Michel lui enseignera les premiers rudiments notamment aux balais .
À 16 ans il remporte le premier prix du GOLF DROUOT et participe ensuite à de nombreuses formations régionales notament JAZZ FRIENDS avec Alain Richou; ils gagneront, deux années de suite, le concours du festival Crest Jazz Vocal, ce qui leur permettra de jouer en première partie de Daniel Humair, Christian Vander, Luther Allison, André Jaume, Sixun ...
Tout comme Dd Franco et Roger Nikitoff, Olivier a accompagné la chanteuse Martine Kamoun.
Première expérience brésilienne avec Luc Plouton et la chanteuse Silvana AGLA DE SOUZA; ils se produiront avec Marcia MARIA.
Se lance dans l’aventure « TAM-RA » - TAMBOUR DU SOLEIL, conçue et dirigée par Jacques Bonnardel (directeur de Jazz Action Valence) avec 12 percussionnistes.
Suivra ensuite une incursion dans la musique celtique avec le violoniste Ian Mc Camy et les Celtic Reelers et le swing en 2007 avec l’accordéoniste Alain Musichini (tournée en Russie).
Olivier starts playing the drums at age 15 and is introduced to jazz music through the Petruccianis during the regular house jam sessions with Philippe & Louis.
Michel will taught him the basics on the instrument.
At age 16, Olivier wins the Golf Drouot prize and from then on, he will play with various local bands such as Jazz Fiends, with Alain Richou.Together they will win the Crest Jazz Vocal Contest two years in a row and this will give them the opportunity to support various famous artists such as French drummer Daniel Humair, Christian Vander, Luther Allison, French saxophonist André Jaume, Sixun ... and many others.
Later on, Olivier will experience Brazilian music with collegue Luc Plouton and singer Silvana AGLA DE SOUZA; together they will support another Brazilian singer, Marcia MARIA.
He will then join the TAM-RA – TAMBOUR DU SOLEIL drum project led by Valence Jazz Action Institute Jacques Bonnardel, together with 12 other percussionists.
This will be followed by an immersion into Celtic music with Irish fiddler Ian Mc Camy and the Celtic Reelers.
More recently, Olivier joined accordeonist Alain Musicchini’s swing project (Russian tour).
Roger Nikitoff (saxophone)
Roger fait ses premiers pas de musique classique au piano à l’âge de 4 ans avec sa mère pour professeur.
C’est avec elle qu’il apprendra le solfège et peaufinera sa technique.
Beaucoup de musique à la maison : classique, tzigane ... tous les dimanches, Roger accompagne sa mère à la flûte avec son frère à l’accordéon et il se produit sur scène dès l’âge de 13 ans.
Il devient très vite multi - instrumentiste et joue de la batterie, de la guitare (heavy metal), de la basse, de la trompette … avant d’opter pour jazz et le saxophone. Avec Bob Berg, Michael Brecker, Coltrane, Ernie Watts et Stan Getz comme influence, Roger décide d’aller explorer le son de cette musique aux Etats-Unis : il y restera 14 ans et y fera une belle carrière studio et live au cours de laquelle il croisera et accompagnera Freddie Hubbard (Mateo Big Band), Alex Acuna, Quincy Jones, Michel Petrucciani … et enregistrera même pour Whitney Houston.
De retour en France en 1990, de nouveaux projets et des tournées se succèdent … en Angleterre.
En 1997, Roger rejoint l’équipe pédagogique de l’IMFP et devient le 6e élément du groupe du pianiste Mario Santchev.
D’autres expériences l’attendent en Allemagne, notamment avec le WDR Big Band et autres formations avec lesquelles il se produit ; c’est ainsi que Roger partage désormais son temps entre l’Allemagne et la France.
Roger first started classical piano at age 4 with his mother teaching him.
She will also teach him music theory and help him improve on his technique.
Roger grows up in a very musical environment, from classical to swing via Eastern music.
Every Sunday, he accompanies his mother on the flute, together with his brother playing the accordeon.
He makes his stage debut at age 13 and quickly becomes a multi-instrumentist, playing Heavy Metal guitar, the drums, the trumpet ... before falling for Jazz and the saxophone.
His sax heroes are called John Coltrane, Bob Berg, Michael Breker, Ernie Watts, Stan Getz ...
One day, Roger decides to leave for the US to immerse himself as deep as he can into the essence of jazz ... and will forge himself a 14-year career, playing both as a session and a gig musician; accompanying Freddie Hubbard with the Mateo Big Band, performing in Quincy Jones’Big Band and recording with percussionist Alex Acuna, Michel Petrucciani, Whitney Houston ...
Back in France in 1990, new projects follow up and intoduce him to the British Jazz scene.
Later on in 1997, Roger joins the IMFP teaching team and becomes the 6th element in the Mario Santchev project.
Further experiences take him to Germany where Roger plays regularly with the WDR Big Band and various other bands.
He now shares his time between Germany and France.
Sandie Safont (voix/voice)
Sandie débute son apprentissage jazz en 1997 à l’AJMI (Association pour le Jazz et les Musiques improvisées, Avignon) et le poursuivra en Grande Bretagne au Goldsmiths College de Londres auprès de Louise Gibbs et Michèle Hendriks, de 1998 à 2004. Durant ce long séjour londonien, Sandie se forge une expérience scénique en clubs, festivals et autres jams sessions (Pizza Express, Greenwich Riverfront Jazz, National Theatre …) où elle côtoie des musiciens tels que Jim Richardson (Georgie Fame), Lord Large (Acid Jazz Records), The Shortwave set (pop rock) …
Son goût pour l’éclectisme se traduit par une longue exploration de la musique brésilienne et de collaborations dans un registre électro : house jazz avec le percussioniste Mestre Carneiro (Tania Maria, Higelin, Oscar, St Germain …) et chill out lounge avec Mozez (Zero 7).
De retour en France en 2004, Sandie fonde, avec le guitariste brésilien-nîmois Paulo da Luz, le groupe électro-pop-tropical-yeh yeh « Guarana », une autre facette du Brésil.
Puis en 2008, elle revient à ses premières amours que sont le jazz, blues, folk, pop, rock, soul et électro : « Side B » est créé avec le pianiste drômois Benoît Thevenot.
Début 2009, un projet hommage au groupe jazz pop rock californien « Steely Dan » voit le jour avec le contrebassiste nîmois Guillaume Séguron.
Toujours en 2009, Sandie se produit avec le tout récent 5tet jazz brésilien «SOLAR» fondé par le batteur du groupe, Olivier Chambonnière.
Sandie makes her jazz singing debut in 1997 at the AJMI (Association for Jazz & Improvised Music, Avignon).
She then goes to London where she studies jazz improvisation with Aussie singer Louise Gibbs at Goldsmiths College.
She also attends Michele Hendricks’ summer classes in France (daughter of vocalese pioneer John Hendricks).
Sandie makes the most of her six-year period in London and gets a stage experience playing in clubs, festivals, as well as attending various jam sessions where she gets to play with the likes of Jim Richardson (bass player with Georgie Fame) and the Chess Players, Lord Large (Acid Jazz Records), The Shortwave set (pop rock) and many more.
Sandie then steps onto a more electronic scene and takes part in a House Jazz project with Brazilian percussionist Edmundo Carneiro (Tania Maria, St Germain …) as well as a chill out project with Zero 7 singer Mozez.
Being a huge Brazilian grooves lover, Sandie’s next step will be Brazilian music that she’ll extensively explore and practice.
Back in France in 2004, she’ll start a Brazilian duet together with guitarist Paulo da Luz, singing “pop-electropicalia-yeh-yeh” tunes way back from 60s up to nowadays Brazilian music.
Four years later, on top of joining “SOLAR”, Sandie switches back to jazz, folk, blues & beyond and starts two new bands: “Side B” with pianist Benoît Thevenot (from nu jazz to nu soul) and more recently, “ShowBizKidz”, a power trio (drums n’bass n’voice) revisiting the repertoire of the jazz pop rock icon band Steely Dan.
